After Kitty Pryde becomes the new Star-Lord, the Guardians of the Galaxy have been to space for some adventure. Peter Quill became the new ruler of Spartax and totally failed when a renegade Accuser Corps member named Hala lays waste to the planet (Emperor Quill). Then they fought the Brotherhood of the Badoon to rescue their captured friend Angela and overthrown the Badoon Empire for good (Wanted).
As they hit the road, they receive a call from Captain Marvel to return to Earth to help her with some Earthy affairs. The Guardians vote among themselves whether to go or not, had a little bit of arguments between themselves why it is not a bad idea or vice-versa.
Though Rocket Raccoon strongly suggests against going to Earth and sticking their nose into some super-hero quarrel which is not their business, the others voted for going back and before reaching Earth all of them start preparing themselves. Soon, they all meet Carol Danvers, Commander Abigail Brand and Alpha Flight at their low-orbit space station. Carol then briefs the Guardians about the current development involving Ulysses Cain, the precognitive Inhuman and her clash with Iron Man.
Since the whole scenario is far more complicated than that, Carol privately disclosed to Quill that how her boyfriend Col. Jim Rhodes AKA War Machine has become a causality of war when they tried to sneak onto Thanos following a prophecy from Ulysses, how they have managed to capture The Mad Titan and since his friend Drax the Destroyer and Gamora are always hell-bent on killing him, she wanted Quill to keep it a secret from them for the time being.
When Kitty Pryde confront Peter Quill about what Carol told him in person, he shares to her the whole situation and his dilemma about not being able to disclose this to Drax or Gamora as it would immediately set them off on a rampage to kill Thanos and wreck havoc in the process for sure.
It would lead all of Earth's heroes after her to stop her at any cost and The Mad Titan might actually get away amidst this chaos. Even after Kitty suggested him to share this info with his teammates, Peter remained adamant on his decision to keep Carol's request.
Before jumpig into the final conflict, the Guardians argue among themselves regarding their involvement and it really didn't solve anything at all. As the time for the showdown between Carol Danvers and Tony Stark finally arrives, she signals the Guardians to help her and things escalate pretty quickly.
Their ship is blown up in the fight and Rocket gets very upset about it while Groot tries to comfort him. Angela, Thing and Venom go their separate ways and Gamora accidentally discovers the secret that has been kept from her.

Guardians of the Galaxy – Civil War II (Hardcover)
When the first Civil War of superheroes hit the Marvel Universe, it affected all of the heroes of the world sans the X-Men. This time, as Civil War II is upon the superhero-community once again, it will affect the heroes of space as well. Star-Lord and his Guardians of the Galaxy were called in by Col. Carol Danvers AKA Captain Marvel to assist her with more power in her favor. Many of The Avengers and X-Men members made cameo appearances in the middle of the story as it progress and also took part in the final battle.
This tie-in story takes place on the fourth monthly ongoing volume of Guardians of the Galaxy comics series, collecting issues #11-14, which is plotted by writer Brian Michael Bendis (Daredevil – End of Days, Daredevil – Ninja), while artist Valerio Schiti (Journey Into Mystery – Seeds of Destruction, Journey Into Mystery – Stronger Than Monsters) and Arthur Adams (Gen¹³/Generation X, Longshot) provided illustrations and cover arts respectively. This arc has literally torn-apart the Guardians on trust issue among them for Quill not sharing what he knew about Thanos with Drax and Gamora or anyone else of the team.
